SALEM, Ore. (AP) -- Oregon legislators are going into the second day of what's expected to be a quick, four-week session, hoping to help small businesses get access to loans.

A committee plans to take up a bill Tuesday to increase access to loans from a state Business Development Fund.

Democrats say some businesses have trouble getting loans to cover the gap between the time they get orders and the time they get paid for them.

Small business loans to help pay for Measures 66 and 67. Great! Add more fuel to the fire. You backstab all the small business owners with the measures you create, help pass, and now you want to help them out by getting a small business loan? Who are you guys?

Bad Conscience in Salem? I doubt it, but I will say it was a suprise that our LLC is not going to get hit this time with the Measure 67 hammer. Next election the politicos can get the teachers to tell the public on TV how bad the schools need the money again ( will they ever not need more money?). But in reality it's for the teacher retirement benifits.

Washco, maybe they want to help the 97.5% of all Oregon business who are not affected by these measures.

@grinch All profitiable business are impacted by the measures. In-fact, non-profitable ones are as well since they minimum went up (albeit slightly). Where do you get your information?

What business is going to take out a loan? Will they loan money to pay the taxes on the gross receipts?

Democrats should have made this LAST YEARS' priority. Instead, they focused on urgent matters of banning puppy mills, restaurant food labeling, and naming state soils. 11% unemployment wasn't considered a priority. Remember, the first 3 are "for the kids".

I'm overwhelmed by the Democratic concern. Where was it when ballot measure 67 was being voted on? My company's tax burden immediately has doubled, per our CPA just yesterday! So much for minor impact. And the doubling increases our tax liability to $26,000. I'm heartened to know the unions supported this truly job killing measure and that the legislature believes they will hoodwink us into believeing they care! What BS...:( Our prices for product will increase to cover this tax and the public will pay, what a sad way to do business.

In terms of Measure 67, I think it's more accurate to say that 97.5% of businesses in Oregon will either pay $150.00 or no more than they do today. Sole proprietorships are not affected. Partnerships, S Corporations, LLC's, and LLP's are looking at $150.00 a year. C Corporations are where it gets tricky with taxable profits, gross sales, etc. But I'm not an accountant, so I'll leave it at that. In terms of the legislature looking to increase loans to small businesses, I wish them well. They've set for an ambitious agenda for themselves; extending unemployment benefits, potential changes to the "kicker" system, and changing the frequency with which the legislature meets. I hope they can stay on task and have tangible results to show at the end of the four weeks.

Businesses wouldn't need loans from the government if the state would stop taxing them to death. Here's a newsflash for Democrats: live on a budget like individuals and private business does and you might see some growth down there. I just moved from Portland to Houston a week ago and within one week I had 5 job interviews and one offer. One week and I am already employed at a better salary than I could've made in Oregon--AND, I don't have to pay any state income tax in Texas. People of Oregon, if you keep voting against your best interests and let the unions keep bullying you into voting against your own best interests, you can't possibly be surprised that government would think they need to step in and provide loans like these. Get everyone dependent upon government subsidy and assistance; that's the push now, and it's scary because the more help they give you and your business, the more power and influence they will have over every part of your life.

corporatemom said on February 3, 2010 at 8:09 AM

mgambino - congrats on the new job. Sorry you had to move out of state to find it. But, that is the reality of Oregon. Companies that are hiring in other states, aren't hiring in Oregon. It will only get worse. To the others - I can't believe so many people are still so clueless regarding these taxes (jim, psynch). Here is how the business tax works - it is 3 fold. (1) ALL businesses will now have to pay $295 to file taxes-which are mandatory (this is really extortion) (2) PROFITABLE businesses will have their taxes increased from 6.6 to 7.6 & 7.9%. (3) Businesses that declare a LOSS will now be taxed on gross sales receipts. (hellooooo--if you make a loss you can't pay more!) Do the math: if a business makes a PROFIT of $260K, at 6.6% they would pay $17,160. At 7.6% they pay $19,760, and increase of $2600 or 15%. Plus, they pay $295. These measures HURT small business, not help it.

Oh yea right, and the goverment wants to regulate the banks and therefore, will restrict their ability to lend money. . gesh that's helpful. Just a marketing gimic soundbite if you ask me.

qwertyuser said on February 3, 2010 at 8:51 AM

I knew it, they are also talking about a sales tax again, this time to pay for universal health care coverage.
