EUGENE, Ore. (AP) — A rematch in the race for the U.S. House seat from southwestern Oregon has focused attention on the donations of a New York hedge fund manager who has backed Republican Art Robinson against the incumbent Democrat, Peter DeFazio.
The Eugene Register-Guard reports (http://bit.ly/TRpERc) that Robert Mercer of Renaissance Technologies has given hundreds of thousands of dollars to two groups that supported Robinson's campaigns. Robinson lost to DeFazio in 2010.
The paper reports that Mercer's foundation has also been a major contributor to the nonprofit Oregon Institute for Science and Medicine Robinson runs in Cave Junction.
Tax records required to be made public show that from 2005 to 2010, the Mercer Foundation has made donations totaling $360,000 to the institute. Robinson and his son are the only paid employees.
