SEATTLE— The idea of changing Washington state law to refer to poor kids as "at hope" instead of "at-risk" has died in a legislative committee.

The bill sponsored by Democratic State Sen. Rosa Franklin didn't even have a hearing before the Washington Legislature's deadline for passing bills out of their committee of origin.

Franklin says she proposed the bill because negative labels are hurting kids' chances for success.

The chair of the Senate Education Committee says the idea needs more work before it can be debated in Olympia.

Excuse me? They want to change this why? So they can pretend that there really aren't any problems because of an issue of semantics?
