SALEM -- The state House has passed a bill that would phase out toxic chemicals from certain toys and children's products sold in Oregon.

Lawmakers approved the bill 39-21 on Tuesday.

The measure would set up a database to track the use of 19 chemicals shown to be harmful to children in manufactured products. The state would work with manufacturers to phase out the chemicals within five years.

The bill is modeled after a law in Washington state.

Proponents say the bill would protect children from being exposed to harmful chemicals. But opponents say the legislation could hurt manufacturers and is too far-reaching.

The bill now heads to the Senate.
