PORTLAND - Portland police Chief Mike Reese will not join mayoral candidates tonight at an union-sponsored forum.
Reese, who has not officially announced his candidacy, initially said he would be vetted along with Eileen Brady, Charlie Hales and Jefferson Smith by the Northwest Labor Council.
Reese said Tuesday he would be unable to attend.
Reese said he planned to make the decision in the next couple weeks, after consulting his family and community members.
City Commissioner Randy Leonard said he will back Reese if he runs.
Mayor Sam Adams -- who announced that he will not run again at the end of his current term -- appointed Reese to chief in May 2010 after ousting then-chief Rosie Sizer. Before that, Reese served as commander of the East and Central Precincts.
The story of Reese considering a run for mayor was first reported in Willamette Week.
The forum is at the Labor Council Office in Southeast Portland on Nov. 15 at 6:30 p.m.
