CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) — Some conservative Republicans upset over tax increases passed by the 2009 Legislature are taking aim at Senate Minority Leader Bill Raggio and have scheduled a meeting to discuss a recall effort against the veteran lawmaker.
Organizers Tuesday said the Reno Republican, first elected in 1972, is targeted because he campaigned for fiscal restraint but helped push through nearly $1 billion in tax increases.
Raggio has two more years before he is barred by terms limits from running again. He says he's heard rumors of the recall and isn't losing any sleep over it.
He says no one expected tax increases would be necessary until the recession hammered state coffers. He notes the budget and taxes passed overwhelmingly, and he believes it was the right thing to do.
