EUGENE, Ore. (AP) — The race for a judge's position in Lane County still hasn't been decided.

It was a write-in campaign — no name on the ballot. The usual vote scanning machines can't handle that, so election workers are tallying the vote for that race by hand, on 38,000 ballots,

The Eugene Register-Guard reports (http://bit.ly/WbOKR3 ) that Circuit Court Judge Jay McAlpin, appointed in May, missed the filing deadline.

So he and four lawyers launched write-in campaigns.

County clerk Cheryl Betschart says people have fun with write-ins, putting in relatives and friends. But every write-in vote will be tallied in a list she expects to run for "pages and pages."

She says partial results may be released Friday, but the last 3,000 ballots won't be tallied until Monday.
