PORTLAND, Ore. -- A Portland police officer paralyzed from the waist down after a tree fell on him last November during an ATV training exercise returned to work Wednesday.

Officer Paul Meyer, a 20-year veteran, was welcomed back to work with a party. He will be assigned part-time to the bureau's armory, part of the training division.

"After facing overwhelming challenges, Paul's incredible progress can be attributed to the exceptional care he has received from his many doctors and therapists and from his faith in God," his wife Mary Meyer said. "It can also be attributed to the immense support from family, friends and the Portland Police Bureau.

"Paul truly has a spirit that will not be broken. There was never a moment that Paul did not think about returning to work. Not many people can honestly say they love their job, but Paul truly does."

Police Chief Mike Reese was part of a group of co-workers who welcomed him back to the bureau.
