Oregonian cuts home delivery to 4 days

PORTLAND -- The Oregonian announced Thursday that it will reduce home delivery and make reductions in staff as part of a series of changes at the newspaper and its online counterpart Oregonlive.com.

The paper announced it would cut back to a three-day subscription consisting ofhome delivery on Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday, and include the Saturday edition as a bonus.

The Oregonian will continue to print a paper seven days a week, with the paper sold at newsstands on off-delivery days.

The change takes effect Oct. 1,publisher N. Christian Anderson III announcedThursday.

He said the changes will lead to some layoffs. Current employees were being told Thursday and Friday whether they will be hired at new companies called the Oregonian Media Group and Advance Central Services Oregon.

On Friday, Willamette Week reported that the more than 35 layoffs included columnist David Sarasohn, environmental reporter Scott Learn, Multnomah County reporter Dana Tims, sports reporter John Hunt and music writer Ryan White.

Anderson characterized the changes as a means of providing around-the-clock access to news and he promised improved digital offerings as part of the process.

This strategy will allow us to serve consumers in Oregon and Southwest Washington with more up-to-the-minute, robust news and information online and on mobile devices while continuing the strong enterprise and investigative reporting that The Oregonian and OregonLive.com are so well known for, he said.

Subscribers who have paid in advance for seven days will only get the partial home delivery. Anderson said they will have access to a free digitized copyof the daily newspaper.

He also said Thursday the updated digital version of the paper would be called My Digital O. But Friday Anderson told Scott Moore, host of OPB's Think Out Loud, that the highly-criticized name wouldn't stick around.

Anderson told KGW that employees of the paper were told they would likely be moving from the existing Oregonian building.

We haven't specifically made plans to relocate. But in other markets where our parent company has launched these local media groups ...they have moved to a different location, said Anderson. We have a lot of empty space in that building right now. I don't know what the owners intend to do with it quite frankly, but I expect and I shared with our staff that it's likely that we will be moving, probably some time after the first of the year.

The Oregonian is owned by Advance Publications, Inc. Similar reductions have been previously made at other Advance newspapers around the country.
