MT VERNON, Wash. – A suspect took off in a Washington State Patrol car and then crashed into a tree, police said.

The deputy said he stepped away for a moment and a man he had just arrested jumped into the front seat of his patrol car and sped off.

The suspect had been taken into custody for driving his own car erratically.

"The person was placed into the vehicle un-handcuffed and the deputy went to go contact the family and let them know what was going on,” explained Sgt. James Arnold. “He turned around and saw the car driving away."

The driver didn’t get far before crashing into the tree.

No one was seriously hurt and the suspect was taken to a local facility for a mental health evaluation.
