CANBY, Ore. -- A Portland-area man involved in a crash on Highway 99E south of Canby last Friday night has died, authorities said.
Layne Jason Iffert, 21, of Southeast Portland, was driving northbound on Highway 99E when his Subaru crossed into the southbound lanes and collided with two oncoming vehicles.
Iffert was flown in a LifeFlight air ambulance to Oregon Health & Science University where he died Saturday morning, said Lt. Gregg Hastings with Oregon State Police.
The other two drivers were identified as Merrill Ralsten, 54, of Woodinville, Wash. and Steve Koutney, 57, of Hubbard, Wash. Neither suffered serious injuries, Hastings said.
The exact cause of the crash remains under investigation. Hastings confirms there's no evidence that drugs or alcohol were involved.
A close friend of Iffert's, Eric McDonald, says Iffert was working two job plus going to art school full time. He speculates Iffert may have fallen asleep at the wheel.
