MEDFORD, Ore. -- A man has been charged with murder for the stabbing death of a 38-year-old Medford woman.
The Mail Tribune reports 45-year-old Jose Valencia-Gaona appeared in Jackson County Circuit Court on Thursday for the death of Maria Guadalupe Rodriguez, who was killed outside her apartment.
Valencia-Gaona's voice broke as answered the interpreter's questions translated from visiting Judge Fred E. Avena, and his court-appointed attorney.
Avena ordered him held without bail, at least until his Sept. 12 pretrial hearing.
Police say Valencia-Gaona jumped from a hiding spot in the bushes outside Rodriguez's apartment at about 8:30 p.m. Sunday and stabbed her several times.
He also swiped at witnesses who tried to intervene and ran away before authorities arrived. Police hinted that Valencia-Gaona knew Rodriguez.
