MEDFORD, Ore. (AP) — Applegate Valley fire district officials are trying to recruit volunteer firefighters as older volunteers cut back on their service, creating gaps at some of the district's seven fire stations.
District operations chief Chris Wolfard indicates in a letter being sent out to the public that the goal is to add at least two firefighters to each fire station.
The Mail Tribune (http://is.gd/ABK7Va ) says Applegate Valley volunteers tend to be older because of demographics.
District fire chief Brett Fillis says there is an ongoing need for seasoned firefighters, but the district would also like to recruit young volunteers.
In the district, 24 percent of the population is 60 or older while 19 percent are 30 or younger.
