SALEM -- Police have the right-side mirror from a car that hit a tow truck driver Sunday night on a Salem street. They said they're looking for the driver of the car that left the scene.
Tow truck driver Craig McKenzie was loading a stalled car onto his flatbed near Mission Street and Hawthorne, with his emergency lights activated, when he was knocked down, police said.
The driver of the car that hit him sped away from the scene.
Medics took McKenzie to Salem Hospital, where he was treated for his injuries and released within hours.
McKenzie said he believes he would have been killed if the car was just a few inches to his right. He added that he can't believe the other drive left the scene.
"I just cant believe that you knew you struck a human being," McKenzie said, "and you left them laying on a highway, and drove away."
Police described the suspect vehicle as a dark sedan. The passenger-side mirror broke off of the car on impact, and police believe it likely has damage on the right side.
