SALEM -- The Salem teen who was critically injured after falling from the bed of a moving pickup truck Thursday was in serious condition Monday.

Police responded just before noon on Thursday to the report of a crash in the 1500 block of Talbot Road SE, said Sgt. Chris Baldridge of the Marion County Sheriff's Office.

Arriving deputies found the 17-year-old boy lying on the south side of the road unconscious. An off-duty nurse was passing by the scene and aided the victim until medics arrived and took him to Salem Hospital.

He was listed in critical condition Thursday afternoon.

The boy had been riding in the bed of the pickup while he was out putting up posters for a local rodeo, according to Sr. Deputy Jason Hickam. He fell out of the truck as it went around a curve, Hickam said.

Steve Alvia, 18, was driving the truck. According to Hickam, Alvia was not speeding or impaired. No citations were issued.

"The sheriff's office wants to remind the public that riding in the bed of a truck is illegal if you are under the age of 18, if seats with seat belts are available or if you are seated anywhere other than down and inside of the bed floor," Baldridge said.
