SALEM – An 82-year-old homeowner fired at a man who was trying to break into his house in Northeast Salem early Tuesday morning, police said.

John Rose and his 83-year-old wife Mamie were home together when they heard someone trying to break in.  John confronted the burglary suspect and shot him, according to Sergeant Chris Baldridge with the Marion County Sheriff's Office.

The suspect, later identified as Edgar Eduardo Garcia-Bonilla, 36, of Keizer, was taken to Salem Hospital for treatment.  Once he's released from the hospital he'll face burglary and trespassing charges, Baldridge said.

The shooting occurred just after 6 a.m. at the Rose's home in the 3300 block of Ward Court Northeast.

John and Mamie were not hurt.

Anyone with information that may help investigators was asked to contact the Marion County Sheriff's Office at 503-588-5032.
