SALEM – A convicted sex offender is accused of attacking a woman near Salem’s Riverfront Park after three men rushed to her rescue.
Police said the three Good Samaritans heard the woman screaming for help Saturday and ran over to find Jeffrey Brian Smith holding her captive with a hunting knife.
The men managed to get the knife away from Smith, police said, and free the woman. Then, they held the suspect until police arrived.
The assault and attempted kidnapping happened along Front Street NE, next to Riverfront Park, police said.
Smith already has a police record as a convicted sex offender. He was scheduled to appear in court on the latest charges Monday.
