SALEM, Ore. -- Oregon's chief education officer, Rudy Crew, will step down to run a New York City college.

Trustees at the City University of New York on Monday appointed Crew president of Medgar Evers College in Brooklyn.

Oregon Gov. John Kitzhaber says in a statement that Crew informed him Monday afternoon. Kitzhaber says he expects a formal resignation this week and wishes Crew well.

Crew is a former chancellor of New York City schools and superintendent of Miami-Dade County Public Schools.

He's spent less than a year as Oregon's first chief education officer. He was responsible for overseeing Kitzhaber's effort to improve student achievement and streamline Oregon's education system from preschool through college.
