SALEM -- Salem police called their tactical team into action Wednesday evening after a suicidal man fired shots inside his room at the Phoenix Inn on Commercial St Southeast, south of downtown.

Salem police Lt. Dave Okada said the man started making threats of harming himself around 4:15 p.m. The Phoenix Inn called all rooms to advise guests of the situation. Nearby rooms were evacuated but Okada said few guests were at the hotel at the time.

Around 6 p.m. the first shot was fired. About 10 minutes later a second shot was heard. The tactical team responded and the bomb squad brought in its robot.

The robot was deployed to check out the room. No movement was seen and around 8:30 p.m. the man was verified as dead. Okada said the man apparently died from self-inflicted wounds.

No one outside the room was injured. The man was believed to be alone in the room throughout the incident.
