SALEM – Deputies caught an escaped inmate and another woman breaking into a Salem home Monday, authorities said.

Just after noon, a homeowner got a call from his neighbor who told him a suspicious vehicle was at his house near Cole Road South and Liberty Road South and his front door was wide open, said Sgt. Chris Baldridge with the Marion County Sheriff’s Office.

Arriving deputies spotted two cars in the driveway with their trunks and doors open and a man leaning down between them. When the suspect saw the deputies he shouted “cops” and ran into the house, Baldridge said.

More deputies showed up and found 25-year-old Franco Moreno Jr. (pictured left) and 21-year-old Whitney Blank (pictured right) in the home. Moreno had reportedly escaped from the Mill Creek Correctional Facility in July.

The parked cars in the driveway of the home turned out to be stolen and deputies found methamphetamine on Blank and Moreno, Baldridge said.

Moreno and Blank were arrested and booking in the Marion County Jail. They were charged with burglary, unlawful use of a motor vehicle, and unlawful possession of methamphetamine.

An official hold was placed on Moreno by Oregon State Department of Corrections.
