SALEM - An Oregon couple who were the subject of a nationwide manhunt pleaded not guilty in federal court in Salem Thursday on child pornography charges.

Michael and Michelle Freeman were charged with four counts of production of child pornography. The two were arrested in August.

The maximum penalty on each count is 15 to 30 years in prison.

Michael Freeman was also charged with distribution of child porn. Both were detained as a flight risk.

Sexually explicit photos of two young girls and the woman were found by investigators.

Police circulated the photo of the woman as a "Jane Doe," asking if anyone recognized her and a tip eventually led them to Michelle, investigators said.

Michael Freeman said he learned from a friend that his wife Michelle had been identified as a "Jane Doe" in a photograph that was being circulated by police investigating child pornography.

Freeman told the agent that "he was in a 'bad place."

He admitted taking nude photos and video of children and trading them across the Internet, police said.
