GOVERNMENT CAMP, Ore. -- A skier died Friday afternoon after he hit a tree while skiing at Mt. Hood Meadows, authorities said.

Hood River sheriffs said 51-year-old Josef Desch of Happy Valley reportedly hit a tree around 1 p.m.

He was wearing a helmet, said Dave Tragethon with Mt. Hood Meadows.

"Our patrols arrived and he was non-responsive. Attempts to revive him by medical personnel were unsuccessful," Tragethon said.

Witnesses said they saw Desch going down a run, then pop up over a rise. He was last seen in a grove of trees.

Medical crews tried to revive him at the scene.

The Hood River County Sheriff's Office is investigating, which is standard procedure.
