PORTLAND -- A man has died after being stabbed several times outside a Northeast Portland apartment complex Thursday morning, police said.

A fight broke out just after 12:30 a.m. at the Village Garden Apartments, on 15278 NE Sandy Boulevard.

Arriving officers found 40-year-old Dion Anthony Matthews suffering from critical injuries. Emergency crews tried to save him but he died at the scene, according to Sgt. Pete Simpson of the Portland Police Bureau.

A neighbor told KGW her nephew tried to help Matthews after hearing him cry for help.

"My nephew was out here with his friend and they heard someone screaming and they went to help him," she said. "I don't know if he was stabbed or shot or what, but he was screaming for help."

An autopsy later concluded Matthews had been stabbed several times and died as a result.

A mobile command unit set up a perimeter and began searching for a suspect, with the help of a K9 unit. A man in a baseball cap and plaid pants or shorts last seen walking east out of the apartment complex but police did not find him.

Anyone with information was asked to contact the Portland Police Bureau's non-emergency line at (503) 823-3333. Crime Stoppers has offered a cash reward of up to $1,000 for information that leads to an arrest.
