MONMOUTH, Ore. -- A bicyclist was killed Saturday when he was hit by a pickup truck on Highway 99, near Monmouth, police said.

The man was identified as 61-year-old Dr. Henry A. Bersani, Jr., who was a special education professor at Western Oregon University, according to Oregon State Police Lt. Gregg Hastings.

Just after 11 a.m. the pickup hit Bersani from behind as his bike moved from the shoulder to the travel lane, Hastings said. The driver did swerve to avoid hitting the bike, but it was too late.

Bersani was ejected from the bicycle. He was pronounced dead at the scene. He was wearing a bike helmet.

The driver was not injured and cooperated with investigators at the scene.

Western Oregon University issued a statement and offered a place for people to leave their thoughts and memories here.
