EUGENE -- The U.S. Olympic Track & Field trials will return to Eugene for 2016, officials announced Thursday.

More than 1,000 athletes compete in the trials.

Chief executive Max Siegel announced the decision Thursday at the Oregon state Capitol.

Eugene hosted the  2008 and 2012 trials at legendary Hayward Field, as well as 1972, 1976 and 1980.

Last year, some 173,000 fans paid to see the events over eight days.

The 2016 Olympics will be Aug. 5-21 in Rio de Janeiro.

Eugene and Hayward Field will also host the 2014 IAAF World Junior Track & Field Championships.
