OAKRIDGE, Ore. -- Oregon Highway 58 was closed indefinitely and 24 homes were evacuated after a tanker truck crashed, spilling more than 4,000 gallons of fuel into a ditch just west of Oakridge, officials said.
Eugene Fire Department crews, Oregon DEQ personnel and a hazardous materials team were on the scene to assess the damage, according to Lou Torres with the Oregon Dept. of Transportation.
"Most of the fuel appears to have been contained in a large ditch on the side of the road." Torres said. "However, officials are still determining how far the leak may have spread."
All homes within 1,000 feet were evacuated as a precaution.
He said the truck was hauling two tankers when it crashed about 700 feet from the Middle Fork of the Willamette River. Only one of the tankers appeared to be ruptured. No injuries were reported.
Drivers in the area were advised to consider an alternate route.
