EUGENE, Ore. -- Eugene activists want to put an initiative on the ballot in May 2014 to ban genetically modified crops in Lane County.
The Support Local Food Rights group filed an initial petition Wednesday with the county clerk.
The Register-Guard reports the measure is broader than a proposed ban that has qualified for the ballot in Jackson County. The Eugene group wants a local food "bill of rights" to supplant state or federal law and the rights of any agricultural corporation.
A similar initiative was filed earlier this year in Benton County. The county clerk said it couldn't qualify for the ballot because of the "single subject rule" that requires measures to deal with one issue at a time.
