PORTLAND -- A red flag warning was issued Sunday for fire danger in the upper Hood River Valley and the western Columbia River Gorge, the National Weather Service announced.
Thunderstorms were expected to develop Sunday afternoon, producing lightning in the eastern slopes of the northern Oregon and Southern Washington Cascades, according to the NWS alert.
The combination of lightning, strong winds, low humidity and warm temperatures will create "explosive fire growth potential," the warning reads.
Storms were likely to taper off Sunday, but another round could start up Monday evening. The red flag warning will remain in effect until 2 p.m. Tuesday.
