TROUTDALE – A man died in a house fire early Sunday morning in Troutdale, police said.

Just after midnight, firefighters battled a blaze that fully engulfed a home at 817 SW Sunset Way, said Carey Kaer with the Troutdale Police Department.

Neighbors jumped into action and pulled an unconscious woman out of the home, but her 52-year-old son, later identified as Jeffery Averette, died at the scene, Kaer said.

"We kicked in the front door and she was laying on the floor in the living room and the whole house was engulfed. We just dragged her outside," said neighbor Selden Stafford.

The woman suffered injuries but they were not life-threatening, Kaer said.

Neighbors said Averette was lighting off fireworks in the area Saturday evening and just a few hours later, someone called 911 to report the house fire. Investigators were working to determine the cause of the fire and if fireworks may have been involved.

The man had reportedly just moved into the home two days earlier, to help care for his mother.

The woman's cat also died in the fire.
