OREGON CITY, Ore. -- Fed up with drunkenness and litter from people floating in tubes on the Clackamas River, Clackamas County commissioners voted Thursday to allow park rangers and deputies to search bags and coolers for alcohol.

Anyone found carrying alcohol without a permit will be asked to leave the park. Glass bottles are also prohibited under the new rules.

"We're trying to make a significant impact on the loss of life that we've seen over the last several years," said Marcus Mendoza of the Clark County Sheriff's Office.

Thousands of people float the Clackamas River from Barton Park to Carver Park every weekend during the summer.
