REDMOND, Ore. – A memorial for a firefighter who died while battling a wildfire near Sisters, Ore. was held 3 p.m. Tuesday at the Redmond fairgrounds.

John Hammack, 58, of Madras, died on August 1 while taking out trees at a fire line in the Mt. Washington Wilderness, near Dugout Lake, in the Sisters Ranger District.

Hammack was born and raised in Sisters. According to his obituary, he was considered one of the best bareback riders in the Northwest and won rodeos across the country. Hammack’s children and grandchildren followed in his footsteps as rodeo competitors.

The memorial service was held at the Redmond Fairgrounds, which was set up to look like an old western town. The memorial will be a potluck, open to the public.
