ROSEBURG, Ore. – Tips from other drivers helped troopers find and capture a reckless driver speeding, at times, past 100 mph along Interstate 5 Monday, police said.

The complaints started coming in just before 6 p.m. Drivers reported seeing a rented Chrysler with Oregon license plates speeding and passing on the shoulder along the southbound side of the highway near Roseburg.

When an Oregon State Police trooper found the vehicle, it was clocked at 118 mph, according to Lt. Gregg Hastings with Oregon State Police.

“While trying to get in position to initiate a traffic stop, the vehicle continued at high speeds and passed other traffic on the shoulder until it was stopped near milepost 123,” Hastings said.

Driver Keenan Pipes, 25, of California, was arrested and lodged in the Douglas County Jail on several charges, including reckless driving, speeding and recklessly endangering another person.

His rented vehicle was towed from the scene.
