BEAVERTON, Ore. -- A Beaverton man pleaded guilty Monday to assault and other charges were dismissed after the man's five-year-old niece crashed a car into a neighbor's minivan, injuring the owner.

Derrick Hess, was sentenced to 30 days in jail and three years probation.

Hess, 29, of Beaverton was teaching his 5-year-old niece how to start his car in a driveway on Northwest Scott Street. Hess was sitting in the passenger's seat while his niece started the car from the driver's seat, according to police.

The girl’s foot slipped off the clutch of the manual transmission car, causing her to lose control.

The girl crashed into a neighbor’s minivan, causing a woman to break her pelvis, police said.
