PORTLAND -- Jesuit High School's Xavier Coleman intercepted a pass last week against Aloha and ran it back for a touchdown.
So do many eager prep players, but Xavier's score stands out.
Last summer, he underwent nine hours of surgery to repair a heart valve for a condition the three-sport athlete had been diagnosed with earlier.
"One day I was completely fine," he told KGW. "The next day they say you might be done with sports for the rest of your life."
He described his return to football field and contact as an "out-of-body" experience.
"God is there for me and God really is good, miracles really do happen," he said. "I was able to put the pads on and it was great."
So, too was the interception.
"Football was always in the back of my head, I've wanted to get back out here," he said, "So for this to happen is just amazing."
After crossing the goal line, he skipped any celebrating and quietly handed the ball to the referee.
