NEW YORK (AP) — About 300 former crew members have returned to the battleship-turned-museum the Intrepid for its 70th birthday celebration in New York City.
The Navy veterans served on the Intrepid between 1943 and 1974, when it was decommissioned.
The aircraft carrier was commissioned on Aug. 16, 1943, in Newport News, Va. The Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum is now docked on Manhattan's West Side.
Former crew members and their families attended a ceremony on the Intrepid's flight deck on Friday.
World War II veteran Joseph Barry traveled from Cary, N.C. He says he remembers the sound of enemy gunfire as Japanese planes attacked.
Barry was working in the radio shop. He says there was "no place to hide." He had to grit his teeth and "keep copying transmissions."
