PRESCOTT, Ariz. (AP) — A stark photo of 19 firefighters killed in an Arizona wildfire shows their bodies lying next to one another in two rows on the scorched earth, American flags draped over the remains.
The picture provides a brief window into how fellow firefighters and law enforcement tried to bring dignity to an unbearable situation.
Those at the scene and family members of the firefighters had wanted to keep the photo private until they were ready to release it.
But then someone posted it anonymously on Facebook on Thursday. Then several media outlets published the photo Friday, and it's been widely disseminated.
Some family and firefighters have taken comfort in the image while others say it was just too soon and not done properly.
The firefighters were killed a week ago.
