ORRINGTON, Maine (AP) — Authorities say a fire at a rural wood home in Maine has killed a father and his three children, while the kids' mother escaped and was taken to a hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation.

School Superintendent Allan Snell tells the Bangor Daily News that the victims in Saturday morning's fire in rural Orrington were Ben Johnson and his three children, Ben, Leslie and Ryan. The children were believed to range in age from 4 to 8 years old.

Ben was in fourth grade at Center Drive School, and Leslie was in third grade.

Their mother, Christine Johnson, escaped the predawn fire and was taken to a hospital. State Fire Marshal Joseph Thomas says she was being treated for smoke inhalation.

The state fire marshal's office is investigating.
