NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Public discussion of evolution often turns into a nasty debate between young-earth creationists on the one side and atheists who believe science disproves the existence of God on the other.

A group of seminary professors and evangelical scientists argue it doesn't have to be that way.

In a series of essays on the BioLogos website, they are politely debating questions like whether the existence of Adam and Eve is compatible with the gradual evolution of humans.

The authors are quick to emphasize places where they agree, such as the reality of the miracles described in the Bible. And both sides show room for give-and-take.

While many Catholic and mainline Protestant Christians see the Bible's creation story as metaphorical, many evangelical Christians find such a belief untenable.
