NEW YORK (AP) — President Barack Obama has begun a day of solemn remembrance of the 9/11 victims with a visit to ground zero.

Hand in hand with wife Michelle, Obama walked with former President George W. Bush and his wife, Laura, to the North Memorial Pool, one of two pools created in the foot prints of the downed towers. All four silently bowed their heads, before turning to offer greetings and hugs to family members of those who died.

Obama's only remarks at the ceremony were a reading from Psalm 46, which speaks of God's refuge and strength.

The president is also visiting Shanksville, Pa., where airline passengers fought back against hijackers and drove a plane into the ground.

He's scheduled to return later to Washington to lay a wreath at the Pentagon and attend a "Concert for Hope" at the Kennedy Center.

In a taped interview with NBC, Obama said the nation "came through this thing in a way that was consistent with our character." He said, "We took the fight to al-Qaida, we preserved our values, we preserved our character."
