THE DALLES, Ore. – The Sherman County district attorney has ruled that the deadly shooting of a man last month on Interstate 84 east of The Dalles was justified.

John Van Allen II, 34, was shot and killed after he reportedly fired on an Oregon state trooper during a traffic stop on August 29. A trooper had pulled him over for a traffic violation and Allen emerged from the car, shooting and wounding the trooper.

D.A. Wade M. McLeod ruled Tuesday the trooper, fearing death, acted in self-defense.

Background: Man killed in I-84 trooper shooting was taking kids on road trip
