LA PINE, Ore. – Officers tracked down a suspect after he led them on a chase in a stolen vehicle and jumped in a river to get away Saturday, police said.
Just after 3 p.m., a fish and wildlife trooper tried to stop a driver near Sunriver for a traffic violation, said Lt. Gregg Hastings with Oregon State Police.
The driver then took off in the vehicle, which officers later determined to be stolen. After crashing the car, the driver fled on foot, Hastings said.
The driver, later identified as 48-year-old Craig Marcum of La Pine, jumped into a river and swam away from pursuing officers. He was later tracked down by a K-9 unit and found hiding in a shop building, Hastings said.
Marcum was arrested and booked in the Deschutes County Jail. Pending charges include unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, felony attempt to elude in a vehicle, misdemeanor attempt to elude on foot, burglary and criminal mischief.
