ST. HELENS, Ore. -- A woman was found covered in blood on a St. Helens street and taken in by neighbors until police arrived early Saturday morning.

Witnesses who found the woman in the 500 block of North 10th Street called 911 just before 2 a.m., said police Chief Terry Moss.

"When St. Helens police officers arrived, they were confronted by a man in the middle of the street, covered in blood," Moss said.

The man, identified later as 43-year-old Thomas Googins of Scappoose, was taken into custody.

Officers then found the victim seeking shelter in a nearby home, "bleeding from what appeared to be defensive knife wounds to her neck and hands," Moss said.

The woman was taken by ambulance to a Portland hospital.

Googins was arrested and charged with attempted murder, assault, kidnapping and criminal mischief. He was jailed with bail set at $151,250.
