PORTLAND -- A 36-year-old Portland man appeared in court Monday for multiple sex crimes, including rape and lewd conduct.
Shane Kavantzas was arrested by detectives from the Portland Police Bureau's Sex Crimes Unit. He was jailed on two counts of rape, two counts of sodomy, two counts of sex abuse, two counts of kidnapping and five counts of public indecency, according to Sgt. Pete Simpson. His bail was set at $750,000.
"Kavantzas is believed to have sexually assaulted three different adult females," Simpson said. Witnesses reported seeing him committing lewd acts near Madison High School in Northeast Portland.
KGW spoke to a woman Monday who identified herself as a prostitute and claimed to know Kavantzas' victims.
"What I heard is, he pulls over, first he circles, he does the eye contact, then he pulls over just like a regular John would. When the worker walks up, he gets of the vehicle and walks kind of towards them,” Ann Marie Eaton said.
"They are very heavy duty charges and the victims aren't people he knows, and that changes the game for us," Simpson added. "When you have stranger attacks like this and this guy is publicly committing crimes up and down the street, it raises a lot of red flags for us."
Kavantzas worked as a manager for a U-Haul self storage facility on SE Foster Road and was fired as soon as they learned of the charges against him, according to a company spokeswoman.
Detectives believe there could have been more victims. Anyone with information was urged to contact Detective Jeff Pontius at (503) 823-0541 or via email.
