PORTLAND -- A Southeast Portland woman died after she was struck by a school bus in Southeast Portland Tuesday afternoon, police said.
Renee Jean Bates, 43, was walking in a crosswalk with her husband Shawn Dale Bates, 43, when they were both hit by the bus just after 1 p.m., according to Portland police spokesman Sgt. Pete Simpson.
Shawn Bates needed no medical care. The couple lived in the neighborhood near the crash site at Southeast 148th Avenue and Division Street.
Bates was taken to a nearby hospital with critical injuries. She died later Tuesday afternoon.
The bus that hit the couple was operated by First Student for the West Linn School District. Two children on the bus at the time were not hurt.
The driver, 55-year-old Billie Jean Neel of Gladstone, was not cited. She was placed on paid adminitrative leave during the investigation. She has been driving for First Student since 1989 and has no crashes on her record.
Lucian Gotur, the victim's friend who was there but not hit by the bus, says the bus driver did not see the Bates couple until it was too late.
"Renee thought she was aware of us crossing, so she kinda let her (the bus driver) take the responsibility of stopping. But the bus driver didn't stop," Gotur explained.
Neel remained at the scene and has continued to cooperate with investigators, police said.
