PORTLAND -- Despite firefighters' efforts to save him, the man who was pulled from a burning garage in Southeast Portland Monday morning has died, officials said.

Jeremy Purcell, 37, was rescued from the garage at 9905 S.E. Yukon Street just after 7 a.m., according to Portland Fire & Rescue spokesman Ron Rouse.  Purcell was rushed to a local hospital but died there, around 9 p.m.

Firefighters said smoke and flames were coming from the structure when they arrived.  The cause of the fire was not yet determined.

Crews from Lents, Gilbert, Woodstock and Mill Park extinguished the fire in just 10 minutes.

Rouse said Purcell was a transient and it appeared that he had locked himself in the garage.

An autopsy was scheduled for Wednesday to determine Purcell's exact cause of death.
