WILSONVILLE, Ore. -- A Milwaukie man was arrested for reckless driving and DUII after several 911 calls from drivers on Interstate 5 and Interstate 205 Wednesday afternoon, police said.
The first of several callers reported just after 5 p.m. that the driver of a bright orange, small car was speeding and swerving across lanes on I-5 near Wilsonville, said Lt. Gregg Hastings with Oregon State Police.
"As OSP troopers tried to get into position to find and stop the vehicle, more calls were received indicating a similar vehicle description was northbound on Interstate 205 at speeds in excess of 100 mph and passing on shoulders," Hastings said.
The driver eventually used the left shoulder of the Stark Street I-205 off-ramp to pass an OSP captain in an unmarked patrol car. The captain attempted to follow the car through heavy traffic, but lost sight of it.
Within minutes the captain found the car on the side of the road. It had crashed into the rear of another car while trying to get on Interstate 84, Hasting said. The driver, 31-year-old James George Nelson, was taken into custody without incident.
Nelson faced a long list of charges, including DUII, reckless driving, menacing and possession of a weapon by a felon.
"According to OSP troopers, many people driving past the scene shouted their thanks for finding the vehicle and arresting its driver," Hasttings said. "A few others also shouted angry comments toward the driver."
