BEND, Ore. -- A 14-year-old Bend boy led police on a high-speed chase before crashing into a pole and knocking out power to a subdivision just after midnight Thursday.

A detective saw the boy driving a GMC Suburban in and out of his travel lane and initiated a traffic stop, said Sgt. Troy Gotchy of the Deschutes County Sheriff's Office. But the boy sped away, reaching 80 miles an hour as he drove into the Deschutes Riverwoods Subdivision.

The SUV then left the roadway and struck a power pole before coming to rest in the front yard of a nearby home. The driver then fled into the woods.

He was located soon afterward and found to be uninjured, though the SUV was heavily damaged. The boy was charged with criminal mischief, reckless driving, attempting to elude and reckless endangerment.

Power was knocked out for the subdivision for several hours and a phone box was destroyed in the crash.
