PORTLAND -- The 10-year-old autistic boy found alone on a MAX train last Friday is still in protective custody, and police have released more details about the case.

Witnesses saw the boy on a Northeast Portland MAX platform and called 911 after he boarded a train and was unable to communicate with anybody, according to Portland Police Sgt. Pete Simpson.

Police identified the boy Friday night, based on tips they received from family members, teachers, neighbors and others.

He was placed in custody of the Oregon Dept. of Human Services while police attempted to locate his mother.

"On Saturday morning, the mother contacted detectives and was advised that the child had been placed with DHS, pending a full investigation," Simpson said.

The child remained in protective custody as the investigation continued.
