BEND, Ore. (AP) — Residents in northeast Bend, Ore., were stunned to look outside after a loud boom and see a garbage truck engulfed in flames.

KTVZ-TV reports (http://is.gd/l4GN4i ) no one was hurt when the Cascade Disposal truck caught fire Thursday afternoon.

Deputy Fire Marshal Dan Derlacki says the truck was burning within 30 feet of a home. Flames were spreading to nearby vegetation when fire crews arrived.

He says firefighters were able to keep the fire from spreading.

Derlacki says a hydraulic arm on the device that reaches out to grab a garbage can failed, spraying flammable hydraulic fluid onto the hot engine's surface. The driver quickly called 911.

Bend public works crews and a private environmental company were working with Cascade Disposal to clean up burned asphalt and spilled fluids.
