SALEM, Ore. (AP) — The former civic leader and treasurer of the Stayton Booster Club charged with stealing its money in 2011 has been sentenced to repay $40,000 and serve 30 days in jail.
The Salem Statesman Journal reported (http://stjr.nl/13JaJzO ) that Dick Morley pleaded guilty to theft charges Wednesday.
That ended a case that began more than a year ago when members of the club learned $60,000 was missing from its bank account.
Morley was once a member of the City Council and school and fire boards, and he was named 2010 Stayton First Citizen.
He apologized in court, saying he had "foolishly used this account as a home equity account."
The club's current president, Shannon Sheppard, said it was happy the case had been settled.
